The MacDonalds came from the South Hebrides and began a farm & gardens at Armadale on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, in the 15th century. In 1790 the first lord MacDonald built a mansion house, which is still there today.
In 1815 the 'castle' section was built according to a Gillespie Graham design. In 1855 fire destroyed much of the original house.
Armadale Castle was purchased by the Clan Donald Lands Trust in 1971 and they restored the 17th century gardens and extended it to 40 acres of exotic trees, shrubs and flowers.
